By “JASON.” FIXTURES. December 3 3—Head of River events. January 3, 1931—Alcaroa Regatta. The reinstatement to amateur status of George Whelch, who takes a keen interest in the Akat'oa Rowing: Club, is urged in a letter from the Canterbury Rowing Association to the New Zealand Council. The letter requests a special meeting of the council to deal with the matter. Georg'e Whelch rowed against Hick Arnst about twenty years ago, in a professional event. 3t is considered that if the reinstatement is not granted the Akaroa Club will be deprived of one of its most staunch supporters. The Selection committee for the Canterbury eight-oar crew will put a trial crew on the river on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. The proposal is to give various ertiws a trial in order to arrive at the best combination. The following will make up the first crew:—Van Slykc (Canterbury Club, stroke), G. Duggan (Union), c. A. Stiles (Avon), F. 11. Thompson (Avon), S. W. Cox (Canterbury), .T. M’Oiffen (Canterbury), Jack Gilby (Canterbury), and W. Whittington (Union). The emergencies are C. S. Morris (Canterbury), Jordan (Avon) and G. East (Canterbury). F. Rogers and O. Duggan have been training on the river in the pairs during the week. They, as well as W. Whit-
tington and W. Green way. appear to be keen to represent the Union Club in the pairs at Akaroa. There will be a rowoff to decide the point. :: :i The first series of head of the river events will he held on Saturday week, December 13. The classes will be youths' fours and maidtn and junior double sculls. :: r: The Question as to whether club crews, or provincial representatives, should compete at New Zealand championship regattas will be discussed at the next meeting Of the Canterbury Rowing Association. Duggan will not be rowing at Akaroa, owing to his being on holiday then. He was selected for the Avon Club’s junior pairs and double sculls. C. A. Stiles and F. 11. Thompson, of the Avon Club, ore going well Ir, the senior pairs, in which they will represent their club at Akaroa. Following are the results of events in thv> Avon Club’s new members’ pair-oar First Heat—Wright and Rushworth beat Costello and Penman. Second Heat—Orsborn and Carlisle beat Hood and Harvey. Third Heat—Thompson and Johannson beat Sherratt and Butt. Semi-final —Orsborn beat Thompson. A scratch four race for Avon Club members was held on Saturday afternoon, with the following results:— First Heat—Rushworth, Robinson, Warlow and Bowden beat Stiles, Marriott, Wright and Williamson. Second Heat-—Bishop. Andrews, Agassiz and Harvey beat Webb, Bitten, Brettel I and Col ling wood. Third Heat —Bridgart, Bitten, Lane and Wilkinson beat Woodham, Jordan, Price and Reed. Semi-final —Rushworth beat Bishop. 25 The Canterbury Club have the following crews for the head of the river events next Saturday week:— Youths’ Fours.—l. G. Smith, S. '' * Cox. Langdale-Hunt, Alston. Maiden Doubles.—No. 3 creW: t. S. Wilson. Pritchard. No. 2: G. East, v. A. Smith. , Junior Doubles.—No. 1 crew: J. M Giffen, T. H. M’Combs. No. 2: G. St C. Gunn, E. F. Hill # A Canterbury Club junior four, consisting of Van Slyke, Day, Oilby and V A. Smith, were given a try-out last evening. In Van Slyke the club have an oarsman who should go far in vowing circles. He was formerly a member of the Wellington Rowing Club.
EIGHT CHALLENGES IN FOR CORNWELL CUP RACE
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 1. The Takapuna Boating Club, holders*, of the Cornwell Cup, have received challenges lor the cup from Otago, Christchurch. Lyttelton. Wellington. Tauranga, Whangarei, Manukait and Hamilton. Napier and Plimmerton are also expected to challenge, and, with Auckland again defending the cup. the contest should be the most interesting on record
