SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Coming-Of-Age Party. An enjoyable evening was spent recently at the home of Mr and Mrs Griffiths, Edgeware Road, the occasion being the coming of age of their daughter Jessie. The dining-room was decorated with streamers of electric-blue and silver to match the dress worn by Miss Griffiths. Songs, recitations, competitions and games were enjoyed The golden key was presented by Mr Griffiths. The birthday cake was tastefully decorated and finished with twenty* one kewpies. Those present included: —Mr and Mrs J. Griffiths, Mr and Mrs P. K. Griffiths, Mr and Mrs C. J. Griffiths, Mr and Mrs Molloy, Mesdames Bell, Graham, Streeter, Hamilton, Misses J. Griffiths. Moody, Schumacher, Bell (2), Messrs Simpson, Bell, jun., Morrie and Reginald Griffiths. Farewell at Waikari. Many friends gathered at a dance in the Waikari Public Hall to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Jackman, who are leaving the district for Washdvke. Mr Jackman has been schoolmaster for the past seven years. Mr Lindsay, in presenting the guests of the evening with two easy chairs, spoke of the esteem in which they were held. Miss Joyce Honeybone presented the guests with a silver bread board and saw. Mr W P. Honeybone was M.C. Gift Evening.

A pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mrs S. W. Richardson. Shirley, on Saturday, the occasion being a gift evening for Miss Aileen Bishop, of New Brighton, who is to be married shortly. During the evening musical items were given by Mrs Currie, Messrs A. Boon, W. D. Currie and C. Heinz. An amusing competition was won by Miss Aileen Bishop and Mr Alan Boon. The guest of honour was the recipient of many useful presents. Among those present were:—Mesdames H. A. Bishop, C. M’Cree, J. Jamieson, J. B. M’lntyre, S. Winney, W. D. Currie. Misses Aileen Bishop, lima Bishop, Ruby Wright, Peggy Wright, May Talbot, Nancy M’lntyre, Eva Winney, Messrs A. Boon, H. A. Bishop, C. M’Cree. T. Moffat. W. D. Currie, C. Heinz, Desmond Richardson, Neville Newbold and R. Whitbrock. Concert at Coldstream.

The Coldstream Hall was taxed to capacity on Saturday night, when a successful concert, organised by Miss Ansford and members of the Bible Class, was held in aid of the Sunday School building fund The items consisted of pianoforte solos by Miss L. Sheppard and Mr H. Dodge, songs by Miss Peacock and Miss W. Amor, recitations by Miss Petrie and Miss M. Ansford. accordeon and mouth-organ solos by Mr Halfacre, cornet solos by Mr Eden and Maori songs by the Messrs Dodge. The performance concluded with a one-act play entitled “Taming the Lion,” the performers being Misses T. Ansford. M. Petrie, L. Moody, M Ansford. L. Sheppard and W. Peacock. After the concert a social was held, supper being served by the ladies. Presentation. The staff of the Christchurch office of the Department of Labour recently met to make a presentation to Miss Consedine, senior tvpiste for several years, who, in view of her approaching marriage, is severing her connection with the Department. Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge, in making the presentation. on behalf of the Department, of a dinner service and a set of crystal ware, referred to Miss Consedine’s services in the Department, and especially in the Christchurch office. Miss Consedine’s future home will be in Auckland Social at Greenpark. At the Greenpark Hall Committee’s social on Saturday evening the prizes were won by Mesdames Maries and W Jordan (Lincoln), and Messrs L. Bennett and J, Clark. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Rica Schroeder and Mr H. Woods. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs Clark, extras being played by Mrs Marks. Mr R. Thomas was M.C. Concert at Cashmere. In the Masonic Hall on Friday night and Saturday night the pupils of the Jashmere School provided an entertainment in aid of the prize and picnic fund. The concerts were well patronised on both occasions. The programme was as follows:—Piano duet, Lucie and Nancie Brown; songs and dances, the infants; violin solo, Philip Lawrence; vocal solos, Barbara Buchanan and Shirley Buchanan ; dances, Brownie Freeman. Jocelyn Parton and Barbara Buchanan. A cantata entitled “The Rose of Joy” was also given. The chief characters were portrayed by Irene Wright, Margaret Baker, Valerie Peppier, Natalie Gilchrist, Gwendeth Menzies, Colin Christiansen, Colin Cooper and Bobbie Baker. Standard I pupils sang an Arcadian lullaby, and those in Standards V. and VI. solos and choruses in a scene entitled “Fisher Folk.” A dialogue from “Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ between Alison Menzies, Pat Dougal and Keith M’Leod completed an excellent programme.
