S.O.S. SIGNAL IS HEARD FROM SHIP.
VESSEL IS REPORTED TO BE SINKING FAST. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 2. The Auckland police have been informed that an S.O.S. message was received at Thames this morning from a ship named I led wig, stating that she was sinking fast, a considerable distance from New Zealand. The Hedwig is a German auxiliary sailing vessel of 168 tons and was built by Nuscke and Co. in 1912. Her port of register is Hamburg. She is at present owned by the firm of IffenLinie Reederei A.G. Local shipping companies know nothing of her but report that she is probably an island trader, carrying a crew of not more than ten* men.
SHIP THOUGHT TO BE OFF HONG KONG
•f>r Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 2. The secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department received the following radio message:—“6.3o a.m. to 6.50 am.—Following heard on short waves:—‘ 5.0.5., Hedwig, Pratas Reef, K.’ Pratas Reef is off Hong Kong.”
