SMOKING IN THEATRES.
THE MAJORITY of people in England will welcome the Lord Chamberlain’s action in placing a ban on smoking in theatres, for smoking in places of entertainment there has reached proportions that cause great discomfort to the nonsmoking patrons. Theatres are rarely sufficiently ventilated, and an already heavy atmosphere cannot be improved by a continually ascending smoke-screen. The growth of the habit among women has no doubt increased. the density, but they might reasonably advance the argument of self-defence. After all, it is not pleasant to go home from a play with one’s clothes odorous with another person’s fumes.
