TWO KILLED IN A MOTOR SMASH.
EVIDENCE GIVEN THAT CAR WAS MOVING FAST. Per Press Association. TE AWAMUTU, December 1. A motoring accident on Saturday evening caused the instantaneous death of the driver and the subsequent death of a passenger in the hospital, as well as severe injuries to two others. The car was travelling towards Arapuni. When about a mile beyond Kihikihi, the driver swerved to pass a vehicle standing on the roadside. Apparently he lost control; going very wide, and then turning sharply back to the road again. Not recovering, the vehicle ran up the side of a slight embankment and overturned, finally coming to a standstill some distance along the road, and facing the opposite way to its original direction. The driver and six occupants, all Maoris, were thrown out. The driver, Tommy Williams, aged 30, was killed instantly. Kenny Williams, aged six, received serious injuries. Henry Warren, aged 46, died this morning in the hospital. Huia Edwards, aged 3S, received a severe concussion. The other three were injured, but, after treatment by a doctor, were removed to their homes. The car was considerably damaged. At the inquest, which was opened yesterday, a Maori witness deposed that he had spent the afternoon with the deceased driver. They had been in hotels, but he considered the driver was sober. One of the occupants of the car said they had drinks at Kihikihi Hotel a few minutes before the accident. He thought the pace was fast, and just before the accident, heard one of the passengers in the back seat complain about the speed. He personally was frightened at the speed ot the car. The inquest was adjourned.
