Fires Upon Men Who Attacked Deck Hand After Refusing Fares.

Charles Evans, 28, was shot in the abdomen by the captain of the Hawkesbury River vehicle punt, during a brawl on the vessel. Evans is on the point of death. He and five companions refused to pay the fees on the punt and after wordy warfare a fierce fight commenced, the men attacking a deck hand, who was flung to the deck and kicked and punched.
The captain, seeing the deck hand being unmercifully battered, fired two shots over the men’s heads, but as this had no effect a third shot was fired and Evans fell.
He was rushed to hospital bleeding profusely. The five men were charged with assault.

suburb of Waterloo last night, and stole £6l. Charge followed them in a motor-car, picked up a young policeman, and ran the bandits to earth. The constable covered one of the jobbers with his revolver, and he submitted to arrest. The whole of the money was secured, but the • second robber escaped.
