BOXING.

DONOVAN WINS. Per Press Association. NAPIER, November 30. Johnnie Leckie, Napier, lost the feather-weight title of New Zealand to Tommy Donovan, Waitara, Taranaki, when they met in an excellent contest in Napier last night. Donovan’s aggressiveness won for him the title, as he gave- the Napier man little opportunity to box, and in infighting the challenger was superior. Leckie appeared to be stale, and his movements were listless, most probably as a result of his having to take off weight. Donovan, too, had to reduce but he. was very fit and made the pace throughout. CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. To-morrow evening’s amateur boxing tournament between the provincial champions of Otago and Canterbury, which is to be held in the Civic Theatre by the Christchurch Sports Club, gives every indication of being one of the most interesting yet held by this body, included in the Otago team are Anderson, fly-weight champion of Otago; Richmond, bantam champion; Leckie. feather-weight champion, and runner-up at the championships in 1929. Leckie’s meeting with Hawes, of Christchurch, is creating a deal of interest in both provinces. Hawes is at the top of his form at present, as he showed at Timaiu last month when he was awarded the trophy for the best exhibition during the evening. When really fit, Hawes is definitely one of the most attractive amateur boxers in the ring to-dav, and his meeting with the Otago crack and a member of the Leckie family should provide a really stirring contest. Hart, Otago's welter-weight, is a good aggressive fighter. Watson was runner-up in 1929-30 in the heavy-weight championships, and his bout with Gardner, New Zealand heavy-weight amateur champion, will create no end of interest. The AVaironga Shield has been competed for three times, in 1911 being won by Otago, 1912 by Canterbury, and in 1920 by Otago. Day sales and ringside reserves may be obtained at Lange’s, United Service buildings. AN AMUSING CONTEST. (United Press Assn.—By Electrle Telegraph.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, November 30. At the Stadium Jack Haines (list 41b) defeated the Italian, Emilio Bernasconi (list 61b). The contest had an amusing ending. Haines shook the Italian in the seventh round with a blow to the solar plexus, dropping him to the board??. When about to rise to his feet, the Italian saw Haines approaching and, throwing up his hands as a sign of surrender, I he slid through the ropes and ran off to his dressing-room, pelted by a section ot' the crowd of four thousand with peanuts. AMERICAN FIGHTS. NEAV YORK, November 29. At Hollywood, California, George Cook. Australian heavy-weight, gained the decision over Royal Elliott in a slow ten-rounds bout. On Friday night La Barba secured a decision over Taylor.
