SATURDAY’S LAWN TENNIS MATCHES.

FIRST GAMES IN SENIOR COMPETITION PLAYED. With the opening of the senior tennis competition at Wilding" Park on Saturday big match play under the auspices of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was begun. The day gained in importance by the fact that for the first time since the ground was bought some years ago by the association all fortysix courts (twenty-two hard and twen-ty-four grass) were in use. The senior grade and A grade inter-club matches were played on the grass, while the B, C and I> grade matches occupied the hard courts. Actually there were 36S players taking part in matches at the 1 the games generally did not produce any brilliant tennis they were interesting in showing how the younger players are coming along. An interestig example of this was given in the match between IT. A. Barnett, latterly New Zealand junior champion, and N. Daly, of United. Though Barnett won 6-4, 6-1, he had an uphill fight all the way. Daly showed quite clearly that he ought to be in the ranking list. He has a devastating service and kept Barnett, who is particularly difficult to play, busy all the time. Barnett was making his first appearance in the competition and he gave a very fine display. Daly and L. Armstrong were partnered in the doubles and though they went down to Barnett and Eaton, displayed a very promising combination. A. R. Cant, who headed the Canterbury College team, in defeating J. R. Johnston, showed that he is still going up the ladder. He is playing with more force and confidence' than last year and will have to be reckoned with later. H. S. P. Andrews. E. E. England and B A. Barrer. the other members? of the Canterbury College team, are all young men who should go on improving. With these and the number of others who are rapidly coming up the scale here Canterbury tennis has very bright prospects for the future. The older generation was well to the fore also, though not quite so prominently as a few seasons ago. Andrew Borrows, after going down to J. W. D. Fisher, .4-6. in the first f*et took the second set 6-1 and was leading Fisher o-2 and 30-love, when the younger man made a splendid recovery to capture the set 7-5. and the match. W. Goss, sen. set England a hot pace in his singles and was only defeated 6-2, 7-5, after a hard struggle. The Canterbury champion doubles pair, Somerville and Tait, were separated on Saturday owing to Tait being indisposed, R. Crawshaw. who took his place, and Somerville displayed good combination in their match with the experienced Patterson and Sheppard. Results were:— AVOXSIPE v. UNITED IT. (Avonside names first.) c.
