GARDEN FETES HELD FOR CHURCH FUNDS.

SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR MERIVALE PARISH.

The annual fete in aid of the Alerivale funds, which is in the adjoining grounds of th r ee parishioners, Air Edwin Hamilton. Mr F. W. Hobbs and Air Wood, on Papanui Road, has become a popular institution; and on Saturday afternoon everything combined to make this y'ear’s fete a great success. The weather was ideal, the lovely gardens looked their best and there was a record attendance. At every turn something novel arrested attention, and in a happy frame of mind people spent their money generously, the result being £156. The stalls and stall holders were:—Produce, Alesdames J. Vernon, Bloxam, T. H. Hall, 11. G. Livingstone, R. E. M’Dougall, E. R. Webb, A. Chapman, P. A. Lawrie, A. C. Cottrell and G. O. Greenwood: cakes, Alothers* Union; sweets, Chancel Guild: bath, the Alisses Ilaggitt, King, Eddie and Rangiruru girls; aprons. Miss Papprill and missionary- collectors: flowers, Mesdames F. Cowlishaw, C. E. Thomas and Cowper; kitchen, Mesdames W. 11. Clarke, B. Whitcombe and BiggWither; Christmas gifts, Alesdames G. Hamilton, J. Watherston. L. Cooke, J, Aloore and G. Cotterill: children’s toys, Alisses Shona Kincaid and K, Hamilton. Mesdames Helmore, T. Gibson, C. L. Hart, H. Gray, J. 11. Williams, F. Pyne, L. Averill, I<. Alorrow, K. Firth. Aliss Orbell and many helpers were in charge of the afternoon tea tent, where the tables were gay with yellow Iceland popies. Mesdames T, Cowlishaw, D. E. Wanklyn, J. Alontgomery, T. Y. Wardrop and Aliss Joan Lee sold ice creams in a cool corner near the tennis courts. Miss Nancy M’Dougall was in charge of the bran tubs, and Mr G. O. Greenwood, assisted by several helpers, took charge of the side shows. Children’s games were organised by Alisses AI. Hamilton, Alary Thomas, and K. Buchanan. A miniature golf course had been laid down, and Air D. Hobbs and Aliss B. Ilobbs found many anxious to try their skill at this popular pastime. Many good games of tennis were played on the courts of the three gardens, where Messrs 11. Helmore, Ross Lascelles and R. Livingstone supervised a tournament which was won by Air and Airs Hales. A pleasing feature was the radio music supplied by Alessrs C. C. Clarke, Ltd.; and through this medium the prize winners in the various games and competitions were announced. Miss B- Kiver and Air W. H Cowper won the first hour of miniature golf, and Miss J. Seymour and Air Peter Wood in the second hour. St Barnabas, Fendalton. The annual fete held by the parishioners of St Barnabas Church in Air Murrav-Aynsley’s lovely garden on Saturday was very successful, approximately £122 having been taken on the grounds. Under the shade of the large trees and beside the flower-beds bordering the lawns, a number of stalls and side-shows were arranged. The former were well stocked with eatables and useful articles, which found a prompt sale. For the children the side-shows had a great appeal, for they included such alluring attractions as a Punch and Judy show. Jack and the Beanstalk marionettes, and a conjurer with his magic. The Hawaiian band played selections. The stalls and stall-holders were;—lce-crcam, Alisses N. Greer and R. Christmas; “white elephant” stall, Alesdames J. P. Andrews and J. F. Buchanan; sweets. Airs E. J. Chennells and Aliss Ethel Gebbie; cakes, Mesdames J. W. K. Lawrence, Robert Loughnan and Keppel Archer; afternoon tea, Sewing Guild; copper trail, Airs D. H. Shea-Lawlor; flower stall, Alisses Barbara Bayley and Betty Crawshaw; produce, Alothers’ Union: bookstall. Alesdames E. J. Ross and W. G. Hand-Newton and Misses Cox and Inman; work stall. Sewing Guild; fancy work. Girls’ Bible Class; handkerchiefs, Airs Evans and Aliss Tennent; soft drinks. Young Alen’s Bible Class; bran tub, Alisses Diana Allen and Barbara Gould. St Peter’s, Riccarton.

The winners of dancing competitions at the garden fete held on Saturday in the vicarage grounds of St Peter’s Church, Upper Riccarton were:— Jig (under eighteen), Jean Potts 1, Bessie Kearney 2. Highland fling (novices), W. Wakefield 1, Rona Alayes 2; hornpipe (under sixteen), Betty Curnahan 1. Alarjory Fraser 2. Seann Triubhais (under eighteen), Bessie Kearney 1, Betty Curnahan 2: Highland fling (under thirteen). Joyce Fraser 1, Joan Sawtell 2. The stall-holders were:—Tea, Alisses Budge, Hay ton, Gardner, Freeman, Coombs, Carleton and Allen, and Alesdames Southern, Ilanson, Ilalliday, Waller, Pearson and Andrew, jun.; Alothers’ Union stall, Alesdames Hodgkinson, Ford, J. Carleton and C. Clark: nail driving, Alessrs Hanson and T. Smith: work stall, Alesdames York, Ward, Alorland, F. Clark, Bailey and Piper and Aliss Kincaid; sweets, Alesdames Clarkson and A. Holmes and Aliss Pearson; bran tub, Airs Cross and Aliss Dorothy Cross; produce, Misses Bowen and Alaude, and Alesdames Crowder, T. Smith, Saul, Kirkwood and J. Fleming. Alusic was supplied by Derry’s Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. AI. Scott. The proceeds from the fete amounted to £lO2.

St Bartholomew’s, Kaiapoi. A successful garden fete in aid of th© funds of St Bartholomew’s Church, Kaiapoi, was held in the vicarage grounds on Saturday. The vicar, the Rev C. L. Sparrow, in introducing Bishop West-Watson and Colonel Dawson, who attended to open the fete, expressed appreciation of the work done by the organisers. Colonel’ Dawson, in formally declaring the function open, congratulated the ladies on the excellent displays made at the various stalls, and wished the staff-holders every success. Bishop West-Watson wished the fete success.

The stalls were arranged around the lawn, tea was served out of doors and side-shows and competitions provided entertainment for the visitors. Father Christmas, With a Christmas tree, proved very popular with the children, and a mannequin parade, staged by Messrs Hay’s, Ltd., Christchurch, was an additional attraction.
