NEW BRIGHTON MIDGET GOLF COURSE OPENED.
The opening of the miniature golf course at New Brighton, at the corner of Beresford Street and the Esplanade, took place this afternoon. The Mayor (M. J. H. Shaw), in declaring the links open, congratulated the proprietors on their transformation of the site, which was now a beauty spot and an asset to the borough. He praised their generosity in giving the first day’s takings as a donation towards the beach patrol. The proprietors of the Maori Tea Rooms were also giving a substantial donation. Mr H. Throp, secretary of the New Brighton Surf and Life Saving Club, expressed appreciation of the donation on behalf of his club. The course is well laid out and Is the first to have its fairways and greens surfaced with synthetic grass, which is the waste from cotton seed hulls, stained green and pressed down ■wet. Practically all American links have this synthetic grass. The garden is a special feature, and even at this stage, looks well. For evening play the course is illuminated by lights totalling 7000 candle-power. The links will be open to members only for Sunday play.
