SESSION OF DISTRICT SYNOD OPENED TO-DAY.

The representative session of the North Canterbury District Synod opened this morning in the Durham Street Church with an attendance of about one hundred members. The Rev A. N. Scotter, 8.A., president of the conference, presided. The business session was preceded by a celebration of Holy Communion, the pre-communion address being given by the Rev Basil Metson. Resolutions of sympathy in their illness were directed to be sent to the Revs W. Greenslade, W. J. Williams and A. L. Witheford. Unemployment. Unemployment was dealt with by the chairman. He said it seemed a bewildering thing that they should have any really serious problem of unemployment in such a young and productive country as New Zealand. The problem was, of course, world-wide, and no one man had a panacea for the widespread disease. Mr Scotter emphasised the need for doing something more than talk sympathetically about unemployment and distress. Many did that ’who luxuriated in splendid homes and comfortable motor-cars. There must be real sacrifice on their part if unemployment and distress were to be relieved.
