Six men have batted for Sunnyside in the three matches in which that team have played in suburban competitions this year. In their first match, Sunnyside declared - with 212 runs on for two. G. Roberts, W. Oliver, R. Chinnery and D. Cocks were the batsmen. In the next match the same quartette hit up 264 for three, Chinnery getting 109 and Oliver 94. In their innings on Saturday, Sunnyside made 247 for three before declaring, Oliver getting 105. If the team keep up their present rate of scoring, the tail-enders will have cause to grumble about not getting a chance.
Members of the Miramar Golf Club assembled on Saturday to honour Mr Harold Black, winner of the New Zealand amateur championship at the recent competitions at Palmerston North. The president of the club, Mr A. E. Mabin, paid tribute to Mr Black’s performance and expressed the thanks of the members. It -was the first occasion on which the New Zealand championship had been won by a member of Miramar Club. The club captain, Mr Crombie, also spoke highly of the credit which Mr Black had earned for his home club. Mr Black was presented with a carriage clock, and a toast was given with musical honours.
Steps are to be taken by the Taranaki Rugby Union to reopen the case of E. Roebuck, of the Okato senior Rugby team, who was disqualified for life as a punishment for striking with his fist a referee named K. Nodder. The penalty imposed by the Taranaki Union was made more severe by the New Zealand Rugby Union, and the amended punishment is considered by the Taranaki body too drastic. Air Al’Leod, the chairman, said the gravity of the offence was recognised, but the Taranaki body’s decision had been made only after deliberate and careful consideration. It was felt that the New Zealand Union’s decision was an hysterical gesture. The New Zealand Union, in reply to a protest, said it could not alter its decision.
The British Rugby tourists,- now oil their way home, after visiting New Zealand and Australia, are bringing back many happy and amusing memories (said a London paper last month) One of the standing jokes of the trip has been the weekly rush, every Saturday night, to spend the “pay ” On “pay day” each member of the team received not cash but little booklets of coupons or chits worth 3d or 6d, and amounting in total to the 3s a day which amateur players are allowed to receive for expenses. The arrangement was a happy one and productive of a great deal of fun every Saturday night, when the tourists to a man set off to realise upon any uncashed chits, as these if kept until after midnight be-
came “not negotiable! ” As the only articles that could be bought by means of chits are drinks and smokes, Saturday evenings as a result became special festivals of conviviality.
The dirt-track season opened in Wellington last night with a good attendance. Special attractions were the Australians, E. llamberger and 11. Durkin. The Grand Opening Handicap was won by T. Wilkinson in excellent style. The, Big Nine invitation race was won by C. Tonks, with W. Harvie second. Wilkinson got into the final, but fell. He re-started and fell again. In the first heat of the Kilbirnie Handicap, second division riders, V. Rinaldi fell and broke a thigh. II D. Philip fell and broke a lef. Both were admitted to hospital.
A Dunedin Press Association message announces the death of William Victor Kingston, aged 55, a well-known amateur* runner and winner of the 250yds New Zealand championship in 1895, and the 250yds and 440yds championships in 1899.
