OBITUARY.

WILLIAM JONES.

The late Mr William Jones, J.Pv F.R.H.S., was one of the most prominent horticulturists in the _ Dominion. l Born at Cobham, England, in 1852, be arrived in New Zealand in 1392. He received fcis horticultural training in England, commencing as an apprentice at the age of eight years, and was a well-know:. exhibitor and judge of the Royal Horticultural Society of England. In New Zealand he soon acquired a controlling interest in the Exeter Nurseries, Papanui Road, from the active managership of which he retired in 1927 due to failing health. Well known as a lecturer and judge at horticultural societies in all parts of New Zealand, Mr Jones was a foundation and life member of the Canterbury and Papanui Horticultural Societies, and did much to further the science. He wrote gardening notes for many years and always was ready to assist with help and advice. Mr Jones was keenly interested m education. He was chairman of the Elmwood School Committee _ and the School Committees’ Association for many years, and was a life member of the latter body. He was a member of the Technical College Board __ of Governors for nine years, being mainly interested in the agricultural section. His wife died seven years ago, and he is survived by a family of one son and seven daughters.
