BOYD AND CONNOR ACROSS ATLANTIC.

AIRMEN LAND SAFELY ON THE SCILLY ISLES. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 11, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 10. Captain Errol Boyd and Lieut. Harry Connor, flying the Columbia from Newfoundland, landed on Tresco, one of the Scilly Isles. They are not proceeding to London to-night. Captain Boyd and Lieutenant Connor were forced down owing to the discovery that the petrol pipe was choked. The defect was discovered three miles off the Scilly Isles and the airmen im- . mediately made for the nearest island. llf the trouble had developed five minutes earlier, or later, they would have crashed into the sea. The landing on Tresco Beach at 4.30 p.m. was made most easily. The Columbia was in the air twentyfour hours, which was good time __ for the trip, due to the following wind. They are proceeding to Croydon Aerodrome to-morrow. Captain Boyd, a Canadian, piloted the machine, and Lieutenant Connor was navigator.

They left Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, on Thursday morning at 11.20 on the hop to England. They were twice reported by ships when on the way across, but were not heard of otherwise. The machine, which was that which Clarence D. Chamberlin used in 1927, when he flew the Atlantic, averaged about 100 miles an hour. The Scilly Islands are off the southwest coast of England, about 30 miles W.S.W. of Land’s End.
