LOVERS RAN AWAY TO NORTH ISLAND.
CHRISTCHURCH GIRL GUILTY OF A FRAUD. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, September 16. Two young lovers who ran away from Christchurch appeared at Court to-day —Mavis Good, a shop assistant, aged nineteen years, and Eric Neville Hill, a caterer, aged eighteen years. Mavis pleaded guilty to two charges of obtaining £7 by fraud from a city firm, and she pleaded not guilty to stealing money and theatre tickets valued at £7 9s sd. After the Chief-Detective had outlined the case he withdrew the latter two charges, saying: “The girl belongs to Christchurch, and got into touch with Hill (who appears here later on a vagrancy charge). They worked for a while in Wellington, and then came to Auckland, where Mavis got employment as a theatre usher. The girl went to a city grocery and said she was Mrs Hill, that her husband was going to take over a restaurant, and that they had a fashionable flat. She obtained goods by that means. Not satisfied with taking down one firm, she visited a number of other places, and owes about £70.” The man was placed on probation for two years, and was ordered to make restitution of £6.
