SAID POLICEMAN ASSAULTED HIM.

MAN COVERED WITH BLOOD IN STREET. An allegation that he had been knocked about by the police was made by Louis Chanal Neary, alias Louis Maxwell, who appeared this morning before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., on a charge of drunkenness. The appearance of his face showed that Neary had either been assaulted by someone or else he had injured himself in some way. He appeared in the dock without a shirt or singlet. Constable Wells gave formal evidence of arresting the accused in Tuam Street at 0.25 o’clock this morning. “ Didn’t I have my shirt and collar and tie on when I was arrested?” asked Neary of the constable.—“ Yes.” “ Didn’t you assault me when I went to the police station?”—No. “ Your Worship, my shirt at the police station is saturated with blood. Constable Wells said that he was in Lower High Street when he heard a hammering on a door and saw someone go into a dark alleyway. The accused came along and said that he had been assaulted. He was carrying his coat. He was covered in blood and in an awful condition. On the way to the police station he accused witness of assaulting him, and later he accused other policemen of kicking him. To the Magistrate, the constable said that he did not mishandle the accused. The man said he wanted to go to the police station and make a complaint. Neary then decided to plead guilty to drunkenness. “ He seems to be still suffering from the effects of drink,” said Sub-Inspec-tor O’Hara. In reply to the Magistrate’s question. Neary said he felt all right now. “ He had better be remanded so that you can look into the matter,” said Mr Mosley to the Sub-Inspector. “He has evidently been knocked about by somebody, either by himself or by someone else he has been fighting with.” The accused was remanded for medical treatment until Friday.
