HIKURANGI BATTERED BY MOUNTAINOUS SEAS.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 8. The newly-repaired bulwarks and a 6tove-in lifeboat displayed by the Hikurangi when she returned to Auckland from Norfolk Island this morning were testimony of the stormy weather through which she had passed. Although she showed herself a splendid sea boat, Captain G. H. George said that she could not escape damage from the mountainous seas that beset her . during the voyage. The Hikurangi sailed for Auckland last Thursday afternoon. As soon as she -was clear of the island she ran into a southerly gale. Captain George could not return to shelter, for he did not know how long he would be delayed, and his cargo of fruit might perish. The Hikurangi splendidly* and shipped only two big seas. One of these, however, on Friday morning, almost overwhelmed |he iittle vessel. It swept right over her, smashing a lifeboat; a fresh water tank was carried away, and the starboard and forward part of the bulwark round the bridge was stove in. Even the funnel was shaken by the weight of water which rushed against it. That sea marked the height of the storm. By Saturday evening the wind had dropped to a moderate southerly, and the Hikurangi made good time to port, arriving only twelve hours later than was expected.

HULL OF OLD VESSEL, LADY ROBERTS, SOLD.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, September 8. It is reported that the hull of the old and well-known Government steamer Lady Roberts was sold at Apia, Samoa, recently for £2O 5s to Mr J. Heilesoe. Except for the two -main engines the vessel *had been completely stripped. The deck houses, cabin fittings and miscellaneous gear were taken ashore and sold separately, favourable prices being realised. Lady Roberts and her sister ship, Janie Seddon, were built in 1901 by Messrs Fleming and Ferguson, Limited, Paisley, Scotland, for the New Zealand Government, and were designed for use in connection with the harbour defence works. The vessels were named after the wife of Earl Roberts and the wife of the Premier, Mr Richard Seddon.
