Len Bonnington, who has been on a business visit to Australia, returns to Christchurch on Friday. Dr 11. T. D. Acland and Mr W. S. Newburgh leave for Wellington to-night to attend a conference in connection with the Cancer Research Appeal Fund. Professor J. E. L. Cull returned to Christchurch last evening from a visit to the Waitalci hydro-electric construction works. Mr F. Bridges, boys’ director of the Dunedin Y.M.C.A., is visiting Christchurch in connection with the South Island Primary Schools’ Association football tournament. At last night’s meeting of the Sumnei Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr W. 11. Nicholson) referred to. the illness of the Hon John Barr, M.L.C., and the Town Clerk was instructed to write to him wishing him a speedy recovery. Prior to the commencement of the ordinary business at last night’s meeting of the Sumner Borough Council, the Mayor (Air W. 11. Nicholson) referred to the death of Mr C. D. Gough, a resident of the borough. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives. Dr T. 11. Valintine, Director-General of Health, who will retire at the end of the month, has been granted six months’ leave of absence. Ilis services will be retained in an advisory capacity. No successor will be appointed yet, but it is taken for granted that the present deputy-director, Dr Watt, will succeed him (says a Wellington message). The Rev 11. Nelson Wright, of Hokitika, who has been appointed of St Chad’s Anglican Church, North Linwood, in succession to the Rev E. E. Malden, who is going to Amberley, will take over the charge on Thursday. Mr Wright was well-known a year or two ago as the vicar of St James’s parish, Riccarton. The presentation of an enlarged autographed photograph of members of the Port Christchurch League Committee was made at last evening’s meeting of the league to the organiser, Mr J. Longton. In making the presentation, the chairman (Air C. S. M’Cully) expressed the league’s sincere appreciation of Air Longton’s service in connection with preparing evidence and data for the Port Christchurch case placed before the recent Access to the Sea Commission. Letters associating themselves with the presentation were re reived from Alessrs H. E. Lonsdale and C. D. Matson. Air Longton, in thanking the league for the present, expressed the hope that he would be. able to render further material assistance. Air G. T. Booth has been elected to fill the vacancy on the Tramway Board caused by the death of Air J. A. Flesher. Mr Booth was a member of the board for many years, and resigned on being appointed a member of the Arbitration Court. Ilis resignation as a member of the Court left him free to become a member of the board again. There were three nominations before

the board when it made the selection yesterday—Mr Booth (proposed by Air W. Hayward), Air E. J. Howard, M.P. (proposed by Airs Al’Combs) and Air Livingstone (proposed by Air W. J. Walter). The voting was:—Air Booth 4, Air Livingstone 2, Air Howard 1.

Professor J. Hoops and Airs Hoops arrived at Wellington by the Alakura yesterday morning on a brief visit to New Zealand as part of a world tour. Professor Iloops occupies the chair of English language and literature at Heidelberg University, Germany. This is his second trip round the world, and it has embraced Havana, Jamaica, Peru, Costa Rica, Alexico and California. After eleven days in New Zealand, the professor and his wife will go to Australia, and thence back to Germany via Ceylon and India. At Havana, Professor Hoops was the German delegate to Havana’s university jubilee, and at the bicentenary international congress at the University of California he held the position of visiting professor. Professor Hoops left Wellington for the South Island last night.

A tribute to the services of Air J. A. Flesher was paid by the Tramway Board yesterday, when the following resolution was carried: “ This board records its sincere regret at the death o'n Monday last of one of its members, Air J. A. Flesher. In addition to many other public duties, the late Air Flesher rendered many years of exceptionally able service as a member of the Tramway Board. He was first elected as a member for the New Brighton-Avon district on June 27, 1906, and was reelected on June 24, 1909 and again in June, 1912. He occupied the position of deputy-chairman in 1911, and was elected chairman on July 7, 1913. In 1915 he was once more elected their representative by the New BrightonAvon electors, and was again elected chairman of the board. In 1921 he was elected by the central sub-district, and again in 1924 and 1927. In 1928 lie occupied the chair for the third time The board pays a tribute to the worth of its late member, and extends to Airs Flesher, and her son and daughter, its sincere sympathy in the bereavement which they have sustained.”
