Why Music Week?

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —The following cutting appear* in Wednesday’s issue of the “ Star ’ :

Station 3YA is to be complimented on the efficiency of the relay system from the Civic Theatre. Last Monday s and last night’s transmissions were a decided improvement on previous similar relays. Listeners who tuned in 3YA last . will agree that the audience at the Civic had little, if anv, advantage over those who heard the fine concert presented by means of “ the radio.”

In the same issue is an article headed “ Mechanism in Music,” which in the main is a glorification of the idea that it is an immense help to students, etc., and so forth. What, then, is the present Music Week intended for? Is it to induce the public generally to attend the concerts, or to buy a radio set and stay at home? This is a conundrum which I find myself unable to solve. It is an issue also consistently evaded by any writer touching on the topics of Music Week. If some more able penman will clear the “ atmosphere " on this point, I will be glad. What we evidently are required to do is to reproduce ourselves, and be able to be in two places at one and the same time, which as a certain classical person would observe, is absurd. —I am, etc., C. ROTCHE^
