l- | MUSICAL CLUB PROVIDES ■ t VARIED PROGRAMME. v. The members of the Cavendish Club e were entertained by the Ashburton J Musical Club on Tuesday evening, when e an interesting programme was presente ed. The president (Mr E. Buchanan) presented the Cavendish Club with an original dry-point etching as an apg preciation Of the club's kindness in granting the free use of the rooms. The 1 programme was as follows:—lnstrumental quartette, “Rosamunde Entr’acte” (Schubert) ; vocal solo, “The Young Nun” (Schubert) ; pianoforte duet, “First Movement, Hadyn Clock Symphony” (Mrs A. C. Williams and J Miss M. Jennings) ; vocal solo, “Blackbird Song” (Cyril Scott), Mrs D. Lawson; pianoforte solo, “Nocturne” (Chopin), Miss A. Brunton; vocal trio, “Three Little Maid,s from School,” Mesdames W. Thomas, A. C. Williams and Miss 11. Brown; pianoforte duet, “Hungarian Dance,” Misses V. Townsend and A. Ruddock; vocal solo, “The Arrow and the Sonjf,” Mrs D. Gunn; recitation, MissHE. Thompson; pianoforte solo, “Arabesque” (Debussy), Miss A. Madden; vocal solo, “The Songs My Mother Sang,” Mrs A. L. Jones; pianoforte duet, “Wedding March” (Mendelssohn), Mesdames H. Watt and. L. Lewis; vocal trio, “The Snow,” Mesdairies A, T. Smith, D. Lawson and A. L. Jones; pianoforte solo, “Venetian Regatta” (Liszt), Miss G. Galbraith; vocal solo, “But Why?” Miss H. Brown; violin solo, “Invocation,” Miss Staples; vocal solo, “I Drearn of You,” Mrs R. Stephenson; pianoforte duet, “Unfinished Symphony” (Schubert), Mrs A. C. Williams and Miss L. Lewis: vocal solo, “In the Valley,” Mrs A. T. Smith; pianoforte solo, “Cradle Song” (Palmgren). .Miss M. Jennings. Scottish Society’s Inglesido. There was a large attendance at the fourth Ingleside of the season held by the Ashburton Scottish Society in + he Orange Hall. The programme was as follows;—Songs, Mesdames F. J. Chambers and D. Osborne, Misses M. Spiller and I. Gardner, Messrs J. Templeton, M. M’Millan and W. M’Andrew; vocal duet, Mesdames Marsden and Rudd; recitation, Miss I. Ede; dances, Miss Bushell’s pupils. The accompanists were Mesdames IT. J. Chapman, E. G. Craighead. Miss Money and Mr J. M’Millan. Votes of thanks were a passed to the performers. The prop gramme was arranged by Messrs W. Brook and H. Cook. After supper a dance was held, music. being supplied by Mrs A. Mitchell’s orchestra. Basket-ball Association. At a meeting of the Ashburton Basket-ball Association (Mr R. J Thompson presiding), it was agreed to ’ purchase medals for the winners of the 2 junior, as well as the senior grade, in ) the seven-a-side competitions played last Saturday. Miss Garbutt, who tendered' her resignation as secretary, donated a cup for the winners of the junior, knock-out competition. Miss Garbutt was accorded a vote of thanks. . Miss 11. Neville, a member of the association, who is shortly leaving to be married, was the recipient of the best wishes of the association. The presentation of the trophies will take place at . a social function to be held later. Saturday’s Hockey Matches. On account; of the games against Malvern at GreendaTe," there will be no senior games on Saturday. The following junior games will be played in B section:—Baring Square v. Lowcliffe, at Ashburton; Old Girls v. Mayfield, at Ashburton.
