ARREST ON CHARGE OF WIFE DESERTION.
SALESMAN AWAITING ESCORT FROM SYDNEY. John Alexander Heatley, aged thirtythree years, a. salesman, of Australia, is in police custody in Christchurch awaiting the arrival of an escort to take him back to Sydney to face a charge of deserting his wife. When Heatley appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at the Magistate’s * ourt this morning, Senior-Sergeant J. J- O’Grady asked that he be remanded until August 28. An escort was coming from Australia to take Heatley there. T think I can fix this matter up by a little discreet cabling.” said Heatley, who made a request for release on bail. He added that he was working in < hristchurch and was anxious to hold his position. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said that Heatley, who was receiving an allowance of £3 a week, had deserted his wife in Sydney jn June last, coming to New Zealand. He was traced to ellington. On being approached by tne police he marie a promise that he would pay maintenance for his wife* He had failed to keep that promise. His next move was to Christchurch.
