SARGON MAKES AMENDS IN AUSTRALIAN EVENT.

A ROUGH RACE AT CANTERBURY PARK

Each of the eighteen acceptors for the Park Stakes at Canterburv Park on August 9 (says the Sydney Herald ”) was saddled up, and more than one of them had their chances settled by interference. It was a particularly rough race, and even fifty yards from the post the happenings were sufficient to cause a protest against Sargon being declared the winner. The open nature of the race was shown by the bookmakers offering the same odds on the field, the New’ Zealander, I’m Alone, trained by the visitor, A. D. Webster, at Kogarah, for Mr W. G. Stead, being the final elect of backers generally. I’m Alone got clear of the others before many furlongs had been covered, but at the half-mile his compatriot Sargon, and Our Theo ran past him. Going up the slight incline to the straight en trance I’m Alone was so badly interfered with that within the next halffurlong he was third last, and seemed fortunate to remain on his feet. Sargon was first into the straight from a fairly, bunched field, and in the last furlong he was seriously tackled by Silent Bird, Sweet Accord, who was unable to secure a clear run until the race was almost over, and Snowcap, who finished wide out near the judge’s box. The horses flashed past the post almost at the same moment, the judge declaring for Sargon, with Silent Bird and Sweet Accord in the minoi places. Sargon had been the most expensive horse of J. T. Jamieson’s New Zealand representatives. He had previously received strong support for two races at Canterbury Park, and each effort was suggestive of a bit of distance being more to his liking. He was ridden by K. Voitre, who also won on King March at Moorefield for Jamieson. Voitre’s luck for the day did not continue, for he figured in a motor accident later in the afternoon, sustaining injuries that necessitated his removal to hospital. TROTTING SPORT. OWNERS’ CONTRIBUTION. Per Pres 9 Association. WELLINGTON, August 20. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, the president (Mr R. A. Armstrong) drew attention to the large contribution to the upkeep of the sport made by the owners of trotting horses during last season. In round figures there were some 1400 horses competing. At a conservative estimate this represented a maintenance cost to the owners for the season of £360,000. This estimate made no allowance for the capital value of the animals, and left out entirely the large number of horses not actually competing that were either in training or being otherwise maintained. The net amount returned to the owners in stakes was £173.000, including several benefit meetings. It would be seen that owners, as a whole, in the upkeep of those horses actually competing, had contributed over twice the amount that was available as a return in the way of stakes. It was necessary that these farts should be made public, as there was an impression ahroad. unfortunately fostered by some officials, that the owners had all the best of it. AUSTRALIAN RACING.
