FIXTURES. August 2—South Island Miniature Rifle Championship Meeting at Timaru. :: k Winter Tournament Matches. '•"he third and final rounds of the r>-iiior grade matches were commenced last week. Sydenham, who at present t’-Ve in the lead equal with Cashmere, in their match against Sumner put. up ri*.e exceptional total of 556, which is only four points off the possible for t-ignt men. Only once has this been beaten in the history of miniature rifle shooting in Christchurch. Sydenham i. five possibles, these being put on , fi. Barker. R. Hay. S. O. llay, W. R. Barrett and O. Jessop. while C. Thom end A. Barker had 69 each. The team - lo be congratulated on its fine shooting. Sumner did not do so well as in •iTtner matches. C. Returned Soldiers A, were lucky to continue their unbeaten record. With a total of 541 they narrowly defeated Lyttelton by three points, this being their lowest total of the sea Son. Nevertheless they look to be in an unassailable position, being two and a half points in thu lead with six matches to be tired. F. Hiscock (70), J. Comer (69), and C. Farley (69) were those that shot best for R.S.A.. F. Coleman (69) and S. W. Burberv (69) shot well for Lyttelton, who were unfortunate in having to count in a 65 card.

Heathcote travelled with a man short and this gave Sydenham a walk over. "Neither side had any large scores. J. *'raig (68) and L. Green (68) were the best for Sydenham, and J. .Evans (6S) for Heathcote. Returned Soldiers’ B team put on one of their best performances for the season in notching 545 against Kaiapoi Woollen. Ltd. The club members were a point a man down below their usuel form, and after a very exciting finish in which the association checkers decided a target in favour of W. H. Harris. South Island Miniature Rifle Championships at Timaru next Saturday. Several teams are going down from Christchurch clubs. The local junior and president’s championships, which were to be held next Saturday, have been postponed. They will very likely be held on August 16. Another lady rifle shot who is expected to become a champion is Mi-;s Mary Ward, of the United States. She was one of the team which defeated Great. Britain last year for the Dewar Cup being considered one of the. be~t . r,f twenty leading rifle shots in l .S.A. Miss Ward, who is only ninefit «0 yards, _ and 73 at' * a total of 395 points out of 100. ss tz :: FITNESS IN RIFLE SHOOTING. Earl Grey, speaking at the annual meeting of the London League of Riflemen last month, said that when lie looked hack over forty years he found that there were not nearly so many attractions for young men then as there are to-day. "I am afraid,’’ he said, ’•that there is a great tendency in the present day to follow pursuits that rjo not lead to physical fitness.” He said that he looked upon rifle shooting as one of the things which tended to good physical condition. It needed steadiness of hand and a clear eye, and men who cared about it had a strong inducement to keep fit and were so much the better men for it.
