NEW ASHBURTON BRIDGE WORK IS PROGRESSING.

The construction of the concrete bridge over the river at Ashburton is proceeding slowly. The work of pile driving is completed for half the distance and the stout concrete supports and decking have been completed over five of the spans. The construction of the concrete sides, however, has not yet been commenced. When finished, the bridge will have thirty-two spans, each being 35ft. At present about thirty men are employed on the contract, which will take another twelve months to complete. So far the contractors have not been troubled with anything in the nature of floods since the work proper was commenced, but it is expected that some delay may be caused through this source in the spring. When the new concrete bridge is completed the old structure will be utilised as a stock bridge. This will obviate the inconvenience so frquent-

ly caused motorists and other .road users at the present time, when stock is being driven over.
