Lady Roberts, Wellington, is staj’ing at the United Service Hotel. Miss Ironside left to-day on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs J. M’Leane, of Wellington, is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs C. A. Fenmore, Auckland, are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Misses C. A. Haworth, Wanganui, V. Gyles and R. Perry, Wellington, are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Miss Rona Weavers (Christchurch) is the guest of Miss Schnelle, “ Meadowvale,” Lakeside. Miss Thompson, Bishop" Street, St Albans, is on a holiday visit to friends in Southbridge. Mrs G. Calder, Halkett, is spending a short holiday in Methven, where she is the guest of Mrs E. M’Meekan. Mrs J. Torrance (Bligh’s Road) has returned from a holiday visit to Wellington. Miss Edna Thompson, Maronan, spent the week-end with friends in Merivale. After spending the winter months in the North Island, Mrs Paul Mickle has returned to Akaroa. Invitations have been issued by the Canterbury Aero Club to the annual dance, to be held in the Winter Garden on Friday, August 29. Mrs E. J. Cordner, Rossall Street, who has been visiting Mrs Hughes Steele, Wellington, will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow. Mrs J. F. Buchanan and Miss N. Buchanan, “Kinloch,” Little River, who have been for a trip to England, will arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday morning. Mrs Raymond Watson, St Albans, left last week for a visit to Australia. Mrs Claude Sawtell, Rugby Street, left to-day to spend a few weeks at her cottage at Sumner. Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: Mr C. Drakeley (New York City), Mr F. S. Vaughan (Wellington), Mr J. Donald (Timaru), Mr and Mrs J. T. Read (Cheviot), Mr and Mrs MacPherson (Melbourne), Mrs Milligan, Mr J. Pollock (Wellington). Mrs J. Black, of Hornby, who died recently, was the daughter of Mr T. Plummer, County Wexford, Ireland. The late Mrs Black, who was only twenty-four } r ears of age, was very popular among her many friends, who admired her bright, brave spirit during her long illness. She is survived by her husband, Mr Joshua Black. Recent guests at Fox Glacier Hostel, Weheka, South Westland, include. Miss Eileen O’Meeghan, Mr Fergus O’Meeghan (Timaru), Rev Father G O’Meeghan (Mosgiel), Rev Father M’Kay (Hokitika), Messrs Reid (Wellington), Samson (Greymouth), Edwards (Christchurch), Matish and Bouterey (Greymouth), Mr and Mrs W. Preston (Sydney), Mr A. Williamson (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs G. R. Chapman (Ross), Mr and Mrs T. Ecclesfield (Lower Kokatahi), Mr Scholefield (Christchurch), Miss Olive Widdowson (United States), Mr Thompson (Wellington). At the meeting of members of the Society for Imperial Culture, on Saturday night, the subject of the site for the new Art Gallery was alluded to by Miss Stoddart. and discussed'. Eventually the following motion was carried:—“That, as the society had purchased a valuable picture for presentation to the Gallery, members regarded the site with concern, and urged that one should be chosen as high and dry as possible.” It was stated that damp is the worst possible enemy of pictures, especially water colours, and the appearance of the Gallery is of less consequence than the preservation of its contents. It was decided to forward the motion to the Mayor, requesting him to pass it on to the proper quarter.
