AUTOMOBILE COUNCIL TRANSACTS BUSINESS.

The council of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening, Mr W. F. Carey presiding; present— Messrs L. Wilson, R. Twyneham, J. Mason, H. E. Kennett, F. D. Sargent, G. C. Curtis, A. D. Dobson, H. M. Garrick, B. Falck. F. AY. Johnston and the secretary, Mr .T. S. Hawkes. Mr F. Langbein, District Public Works Engineer, wrote requesting that the association should pay their contribution to the cost of the reconstruction of the Holiest on-Rakaia highway. —The account of 1128 12s 9d was passed for payment. The Highways Board wrote stating that when the opportunity offered a complete survey of the section of the Main West Road, incorporating the suggested AYaimakariri bridge, would be made with a view to determining the best means of crossing the river. A letter was received from the Ashburton branch cf the C.A.A. asking if the council would make inquiries regarding the speed trap set at Dunsandel. The members of the Ashburton branch wished to know whether there were any regulations governing the speed of cars apart from the 3u m.p.h. speed limit. The secretary stated that he had replied stating that action would be taken when the prosecutions were proceeded with. The Social Committee recommended that a light car trial be held during October, the route to be via Banks Peninsula. No petrol test would be included, but in the event of a tie a. petrol test over an approved course should decide the winner. It was decided that the Roads Committee bring down a report on road patrols. The patrolman, Mr T. TT. Torrens, reported that the Alain South Road had been patrolled daily with the exception of four days, when lie was engaged on other work. There had not been many calls for assistance. He advised that on the day of the test match (July 5) over 200 motorists had been Warned of the trap. . , _ A grant of £25 to the Arthurs Pass National Park Board was made^ It was decided to donate io os to the Port and City League.
