CARRIER ’PHONE SYSTEM IN USE.
WILL BE INSTALLED AS FAR AS DUNEDIN. The installation of the carrier current telephone system between Greymouth and Christchurch is proving effective and economical so far as the present experiment has been conducted on that section. It is still definitely regarded as being in the experimental stage, however, and the engineers are interested to learn how the system will stand up to the work in the higher altitudes of the alps. The work was only recently completed but an official of the Department stated this morning that tests had proved it to be most satisfactory. This system does not require the installation of new lines but allows any single line to be used to its full capacity. The Department is now awaiting the arrival of the gear to instal this type of current and apparatus on the main south line between Christchurch and Dunedin. The next few months should see the start of this work. The carrier system has proved its efficiency in the inter-island ’phone service and it has not been found necessary to replace the cable, which, up to the time of the installation of the new system, proved such costly work. On several ether lines, considerable economy has been effected through this system particularly on the BlenheimChristchurch portion, where it would otherwise have been necessary by this time to erect two further wires.
