FIRST EMPIRE GAMES HELD LONDON, 1911.
Now that the New Zealand Empire Games team is well on its way to Canada, it is interesting to recall that the first Empire Games were held in London. At the festival of Empire (London, 1911), ten events were agreed upon to carry points for the Lonsdale Cup, the symbol of Empire athletic supremacy. These were allotted: Track athletics 5, swimming 2, boxing (heavy-weight only) 1, wrestling (middle-weight only) )1, and lawn tennis, (singles only) 1. The various winners were:— Athletics.—loo yards: F. J. Ilalbaus (Canada) 10 2-ssee. 220 yards: F. J. Ilalbaus (Canada), 23sec. 880 yards: J. M. Hill (Great Britain), lmin 58 3-osec. Mile:'J. L.'Tait (Canada), 4min 46 l-ssec. 120 yards hurdles: Kenneth Powell (Great Britain), 16sec. Swimming.—loo yards: Harold Hardwick (Australia and New Zealand ), 60 3-ssec. One mile: G. Hodgson (Canada), 25min 27 3-ssee. Boxing: Harold Hardwick (Australia and New Zealand) ; and wrestling: Bacon (Great Britain). Lawn tennis: The lawn tennis match was abandoned owing to the Canadian representative having to return to Canada and being unable to stay for what was a postponed fixture. The late Anthony Wilding was to represented Australia and New Zealand and looked a sure winner.
