WINTER CARNIVAL CABARET.

TO AID PLUNKET SOCIETY. Mrs A. F. Wright (president of the Cashmere Hills branch of the Plunket Society), Mrs 11. Wales, Mrs A. W. Hale and Mrs W. Broadway organised a winter carnival cabaret on Saturday evening in the Masonic Hall, Cashmere Ilills, in aid of the Plunket Society’s funds. The guests arrived dressed in sporting kit, berets, scarves, knitted jumpers and short kilted skirts, evening dress, and a few in fancy dress. They were greeted by the promoters in the vestibule, where a cheery log fire was burning, and huge bowls of red-berried creatagus crenulata made an effective decoration. The hall was transformed into an Arctic scene of dazzling white snow and icicles, against which were silhouetted silver birch trees and cabbage palms, sprinkled with snow. Margaret Middleton’s orchestra supplied the music, and was ensconced apparently on a glacier, as alpenstocks, skis and ice-picks were to be seen, as well as a Polar bear and snow-men. Even the buffet and cabaret tables represented snow scenes, with trees, quaint snowmen. and snowballs galore. Glowing red curtains and brightly hued birds perched in the trees and gave a note of colour to counteract so much chilliness. Roast chestnuts from iron braziers were obtainable, and when supper-time came, saveloys, roast potatoes, sausage rolls and hot coffee were served, followed by a plum pudding, set alight in the time-honoured way. Thanks to Mr Smail, the lighting effects greatly enhanced the beauty of the scene. Miss Mulvany Gray and Miss Mackenzie gave an exhibition dance. Before dispersing, the guests joined in a snowball fight. Among those present were: —Mrs Cracroft Wilson, Mrs R. Wilson (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Guild, Mr and Mrs Fowerakei*, Mrs 11. Young, Mrs A. H.
