■\TOISELESS TRAINS are to play their part in the still further development of Montreal. The city, although a thousand miles from the Atlantic Ocean, has been converted by the cutting of canala in the St Lawrence area into one ot tne world’s greatest seaports, and with tne single exception of Los Angeles, it w growing faster than any other city in North America. In the convection, apparently, that she will one day be nearly as large as London, developments have been put in hand which will envisage a population of five million people. They will relate chiefly to the construction of new railway terminals and on these alone will involve the otitlav of £10,000,000. That the venture is well worth while is indicated by the fact that 60,000 people are expected to derive their livelihood by the increased employment afforded by the completion of the r>roiect In the construction, artisans of everv trade will be required; 66,000 tons of steel, 350.000 barrels of cement and 4 000,000 cubic yards of grading will be used, while 100,000.000 cubic feet of buildifltrc will be erected. ... , g Among the many benefits which the developments will confer will be an increased measure of cleanliness and quiet due to the electrical operations of the trains. The tracks will rest on a thick cushion of crushed rock ballast, thus obviating the roar with which those living near railways am only tod familiar. There will be also remarkable changes in street traffic administration, for no fewer than S 3 overhead crossings and subways will be built and 50 existing level-crossings will be cumulated.
