RUGBY UNION TO SEND MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY.

SOLEMN REQUIEM MASS WILL BE CELEBRATED.

In connection with the death of Sir Joseph Ward there will be appropriate celebrations at the Catholic Cathedral A solemn requiem mass will be celebrated at ten o’clock to-morrow morning, as to-morrow is the day appointed for the public funeral procession through the streets of Wellington Bishop Brodie will preside and speak at the Mass, and it is expected that the clergy of the city and suburban parishes will assist. The Gregorian music of the requiem mass will be sung by the priests. As the accommodation of the Cathedral is spacious and ample, provision will be made for any members of the general community who may wish to be present.

The Canterbury Rugby Union decided last night to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Sir Jospph Ward. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to the former Prime Minister.

The chairman of the union’s management committee (Mr A. E. M’Phail) said that the union was a semi-public body, and he was sure that members appreciated the work Sir Joseph had done for this Dominion, and his loss would be severely felt by everybody Even those who were not politicallyminded had followed the career of Sir Joseph with interest and admiration. 1
