The Board of Governors of the Canterbury Agricultural College yesterday received word from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research that the Government, on account of projected economies, would not go on with the verbal agreement made to lease certain of the board's land for general research purposes. The land referred to is a section near the Lincoln township, and at previous meetings of the board willingness had been expressed to meet the Department in the leasing of the land, and to co-operate with the research work to he carried out. Arrangements had already been made, but they were only verbal. “ Life is filled with broken promises,” commented the chairman, the Hon D. Buddo. “ One hardly expects that from the Government,” said a member. “ I am not so sure about that,” said Mr C. 11. Hewlett. It was finally decided that the board should impress upon the Department the importance of the matter, and urge that the verbal agreement be adhered to. “It is not that we want to profit from the lease of the land, but that we want to be associated with research work of this kind,” the chairman said.
