MEAT PRICES STILL REMAIN REASONABLE. FISH IS SCARCE TO-DAY; VEGETABLES PLENTIFUL. There has so far been no movement in the prices of beef and mutton, and the housewife can still continue to buymeat at prices which are more reasonable than they have been for years. For some months now the same quotations have obtained, but it is not to be expected that they will rule, for very much longer. The season is now well advanced, and prices must be expected to rise shortly. Quotations are as follows:—Mutton: Flaps 2d a lb, forequarters 3d, shoulders 4Jd, legs 6d, chops from 3d. Lamb: Large forequarters 7£d, medium from Bid, large sides 9£d, large hindquarters lOd. Beef: Skirt steak 6d, beefsteak 6d, sirloin Bsd. ribs 6£d, gravy beef sd, flanks 4d, brisket sd. Fish is Scarce. Most sorts of fish are scarce and dear to-day, supplies being very short. The popular grades of smoked fish are in good supply, and oysters are plentiful. Island Oranges Dearer. Island oranges have become a little dearer during the last few days, but prices should ease when the new shipment arrives in the middle of the week. Island oranges are at present priced at 5 and 6 a shilling. There is a shipment of very fine Australian navel oranges in the shops at present selling at 4, 5 and 6 a shilling. Poorman oranges from Auckland are retailing at 31b for Is 9d. Apples also are hardening a little, and to-day the popular dessert varieties are quoted at 4d to 5d a lb. Mandarines are selling at 8 and 10 a shilling. Pines are bringing Is 6d to 2s 6d, and passions, which are a little scarcer, are selling at 10 and 8 a shilling. Californian lemons have been scarce for some time now, and what are coming on to the market here are not of a very good sample. They are selling at 5 and 8 a shilling. Samoan bananas are still in good supply and are cheap at 6, 8 and 10 a shilling. Hothouse tomatoes still appear in the shops at prices ranging from 8d to Is 6d a lb, but they are getting a good deal scarcer. There are also a few Australian grapes left at Is 3d a lb, but supplies are falling off. Vegetables are plentiful for this time of year, cabbages and cauliflowers being in good supply. Artichokes are 2d a lb. and leeks are Id and 6d a bundle. Marrows and pumpkins are in good supply, and are fairly cheap. All root vegetables are plentiful, and are selling at 2d a

bundle. Brussels sprouts are also in the shops in good quantities and are selling at 8d a lb. There is still some celery left at 6d and 8d a bunch. Swedes are selling at 81b for Is.
