SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Skating Evening. A successful skating evening was held last night at Stillwell’s Rink in Ferry R°ad, when over two hundred skaters participated. The rink was decorated with coloured festoons and on the walls panels were featured. The semi-final of the Men’s Half-Mile Skating Championship found the following finalists: Messrs S. Anderson, J. O’Neil, D. Drake and J. Johnston. The grand final will be held on Monday next. Prebbleton. Bachelors’ Ball. Oil Tuesday evening in the Public Hall at Prebbleton the bachelors of the district held their annual ball. The hall had been decorated with streamers—ranging in colour from pale lemon to deep orange. The same colours were used to shade the electric lights, and baskets of foliage were suspended from the ceiling. The committee, with Mr Walter Hartnell as chairman and Mr Geo. M’lntosh as secretary, are to be congratulated upon their success. Dance music was provided by Bryson’s band, extras being played by Miss Jean Hammond. Novelty numbers lent variety to the programme, and a Monte Carlo one-step was won by Mr and Mrs W O. Downey. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Shiela Cherry and Mr L. Pickering, and a Cinderella dance by Miss Hammond and Mr W. M’lntosh. Mr G. M’lntosh was M.C., and the Grand March was led by Mr W. Hartnell and partner. Social and Dance. Old friends met again when past students of the West Christchurch District High School held a social and dance in the Orange Hall on Thursday evening to celebrate the revival of both the Old Girls’ and Old Boys’ Associations. There was a good attendance of members of both associations and in view of the enthusiasm shown it was decided that further functions of a similar nature should be held at intervals during the year. A dainty supper was served and items were given by Misses Avril Glanville, Romola Bunt, and Joan Yardley. It was a very enjoyable evening for all present, and there were many expressions of regret when the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought proceedings to a close.
