ASHBURTON HOUSE IS BURGLED; RING STOLEN.

(Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, June 27. _ The residence of Mr W. J. Miller, 74, Aitken Street, was burgled yesterday afternoon and a valuable ring and some silver that had been left on a dressing-table in the bedroom were stolen. It is believed that entry was gained b w an upstairs window. Practically every room in the house had been ransacked: even the children’s wardrobe had been interfered with When Mrs Miller went out she locked all the windows, but when she returned the windows were open, the burglar or burglars having apparently prepared to make a hurried exit if disturbed. Earlier this week a widow with a young family, residing in the same street, lost £l2, which was stolen while she was away from home. ASHBURTON COURT. Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Ashburton to-day. Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases:—J. Coutts v. C. Johnstone, 11s, costs £1 Is; J. Orr and Co. v. M. A. Tait, £2 3s Id, costs £1 8s 6d: Ernest Jones v. Samuel Joseph Beaven, £6 10s, costs 9s; W. S. Newburgh v. R. Mabley, £2O 14s 6d, costs £4 5s 6d; Bennett and John v. J. Moore, £1 4s 6d, costs 8s; G. L. Soal v. George Keeley, £27 os 3d, costs £3 7s 6d. W. Healey was ordered to pay J. J. Niven and Co £6 13s lOd, with costs 15s 6d, in monthly instalments of £3. in default seven days’ imprisonment. An order was made against S. Beaven for payment of £1 6s to Bennett and John, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. On a charge of failing to give way to .traffic on his right, George Brand was fined £l. with costs 10s. For cutting a corner, 11. Ferris Brown was fined 10s, with costs 10s. Annie Jane Wall, a Plunket nurse, pleaded not guilty to charges of driving in a dangerous manner and cutting a corner Senior-Sergeant Martin explained that the charges arose out of an accident in which Nicholas E. Fitzgerald, who was walking over the intersection at the Post Office, was struck by a car driven by defendant and seriously injured. The second charge was withdrawn and on the first defendant was convicted and fined £5 with costs.
