NAPIER PARK RACES. Per Press Association. GREENMEADOWS, June 27. The Napier Park Club’s winter meeting opened at Greenmeadows to-day in brilliant weather, and there was a good attendance. Results:—

TRAINER INJURED. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, June 27. While exercising a horse on the Southland course, Fred Ellis, a wellknown trainer, sustained a broken leg through the animal falling on him. The injury necessitates cancellation of his trip to Australia. RICCARTON NOTES. Some useful work was got through on the number seven track yesterday, though proceedings were much later than usual, on account of the severe frost. There was not much to choose between Toawai and Quarterdeck at the end of a mile, which occupied 1.45 These two are both engaged in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton, where they may race well. Discourse covered seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5 and was going on at a sound pace at the end. Gala Day occupied 1.49 for a mile, being led home by Sea Boy, who joined in for the last five furlongs. Ranelagh easily defeated Pangolin over six furlongs in 1.21. Pongolin will be a competitor in the hurdle race at Ashburton, while Ranelagh may make a trip to Trentham next month. Lancer covered six furlongs in 1.19, finishing on strongly. He should show up prominently among the hurdlers at Ashburton. Limerick and Dunraven were associated over five furlongs, but they were not unduly hurried, the last three taking 40 sec. Painkiller beat Huntley over four furlongs in 52 3-ssec. Painkiller, who may be raced at Trentham, is a promising young galloper. Lord Thomond took 54 sec to run half a mile but he was going easily all the way. Kulrange (I. Tilson) went once round the steeplechase fences. He jumps a trifle big but he is very safe. Heisler, Garvary, Haze, Royal Mint, Troilus and Giggleswick were among the other Ashburton candidates who got through useful tasks. ELLERSLiE NOTES. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 26. There was not a great deal doing at Ellerslie this morning, although several horses with engagements at the Waipa meeting were given fast work on the No. 3 grass track, which was the only track available. The weather was fine and the going was inclined to be holding. . Dayform ran home from the halfmile post in 56 2-ssec, doing it nicely. Merry Lu, Thunderstorm and Land Measure were sprinted over five furlongs. They ran the first tw’o furlongs in 25sec, at which stage Land Measure was in front and showed the way into the straight, where she was eased up, and Thunderstorm was slightly _ ahead of Merry Lu at the finish, running the distance in lmin Bsec. Maori Boy was not doing his best to cover six furlongs in lmin 26 2-ssec. This horse is looking in great order, and will go to Te Awamutu to fulfil his engagement at the Waipa meeting. Lady’s Boy, who is still showing distinct signs of soreness, ran home from the five furlong post in lmin 12sec. Quincoma, Mountain Guide and Bennie were associated over a round, completing the distance in lmin 49sec, the last seven furlongs taking lmin 40sec. They were bunched at the finish. Hannibal completed a seven-furlong task in lmin 38sec, the last six being covered in lmin 23sec. He finished up his work in good style. Stimulant and Grand Spirit, the rising three-year-olds in W. Gall’s stable, were timed to run home from the three furlong peg in 40 1-osec. Others to do useful work were Neil, Brampton, Sub-Editor. Principal, Operatic, Respirator and Wild Country, while Odin did strong work on the sand. ENGLISH RACING. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received June 27. 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, June 26. At the Newbury meeting, the following was the result of the NEWBURY SUMMER CUP, of 1500 sovs. One mile and a half. PAUL CARET, Colonel F. Blacker’s br h, by Essexford—Jap Silk, 4yrs 1 BUOYANT BACHELOR, Mr C. W. Gordon’s ch b, by Bachelor’s Double—Ocean Light, svrs .... 2 OLD ORKNEY, Mr J. J. Murphy's ch g, by Loch Lomond—Queen’s Health, 6yrs 3 Eight horses started. • Won by a head, with a neck between second and third.

EVENING MAY MAKE AMENDS. FORM REVIEWED FOR ASHBURTON MEETING. (By MARTIAN.) Local interest in the sporting world will be centred on the Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting, to be held to-morrow. With one exception the fields are well up to average, and a couple of trotting events will add variety. Lancer Favoured. The Hinds Hurdles will open proceedings, and there’s no doubt that Lancer will be favourite. He ran two nice races at Washdyke for a third and a second, and should be a lot better for the outings. Pangolin did not run into a place last week, but the outings should have worked an improvement in his condition, and he should not be long now. Troilus is very w r ell and is not done with. He will have solid backing. Oriflamb did not go at all well at Washdyke. Heisler has given some dashing displays at headquarters, and will make the pace for most of the way. Zeuxis gave an improved display at Washdyke on Saturday and he may come to light soon. Form points to LANCER with TROILUS the most likely of the others. Kentish Lady Due. Kentish Lady has disappointed in her recent efforts, but she has been working so well that she looks the likely one in the Moreton Hack Handicap. Fortalice showed up on the second day at Washdyke and must command respect. Colonfel Quex is speedy, while Giggleswick and Garvary are a pair of improvers on the minimum. KENTISH LADY and GIGLESWICK should salute the judge. George Rey’s Good Form. George Rey came to light convincingly at Forbury Park recently, where he won twice, and he will be pounced upon as the “ good thing ” in the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap. Silverwood, off the front, has only to leave the mark with the rest to make her presence felt, as she is a very smart filly. Kate Logan and Kautoma should add interest to the race. Red Shiner is useful. GEORGE REY and SILVERWOOD should race well. Evening’s Good Prospects. Although the class is not strong in the Mayfield Handicap, the material is there to provide an interesting race. With Ranelagh out of the way Haze must have a chance on Washdyke running last Saturday, while Royal Mint, who was only a neck behind Haze, should be close up. Evening went a fair race in the Teschemaker Handicap, finishing right up fourth, and she should get some of the money. Toawai will have numerous admirers, but his latest form over six furlongs has not been encouraging and how he will fare over ten remains to be seen. Quarterdeck generally goes well for G. Salt, and with him in the saddle she may give a good account of herself. Interest will attach to Punchestown’s showing. EVENING and HAZE should fight out the finish. Radiate’s Prospects. Radiate carried 10.13 when he accounted for the Otipua Steeplechase, and with 131 b more and half a mile less to travel in the Dromore Steeplechase he should again be found disputing the finish. Tunamoe was a close second to Valves on the second day and promises to run well. Gala Day’s debut at Washdyke as a ’chaser was not auspicious as he crashed, but he has jumped well at Riccarton this week and may make amends. Wairio performed well at Wingatui and will come strongly into calculations. Diamond Jack has his success at Washdyke to recommend him. French Fleet was a fair third to Radiate and Valves in the Otipua Steeplechase and appears to have excellent prospects. RADIATE and FRENCH FLEET should provide a lot of interest. A Small Field. Only four are engaged in the Maronan Handicap, and FIRST RAID may be just too good for RASCAL. Princess Thea Shows Promise. Princess Thea went a fair race in the Trial Handicap at the recent Ashburton winter meeting, and she may go one better in the Winchmore Trot Handicap. Author Willings will have hosts of friends, while Real Girl has been expected for some time. The Wrack filly Sea Mist will have friends off 24yds, and Derry Pointer and Glenville should be close up. PRINCESS THEA went 3.34 4-5 at the last Ashburton trotting meeting, and should race prominently off the front in a 3.42 class. AUTHOR WILLINGS should keep her busy.
