ACCUSED DENIES HE WILL REPEAT OFFENCE. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 27. Ganish Gwan, an Indian hawker, aged twenty-nine, who was making his thirty-fourth Court appearance, pleaded guilty to a charge of being found on enclosed premises in Nelson Street. He lurched sideways in the dock, a Court orderly and a burly sergeant rushing forward to support him. “He looks pretty bad,” said the Magistrate (Mr Hunt). Chief-Detective Hammond: He’s only looking for sympathy. The Sub-Inspector said that Gwan was found on a verandah at 3.30 this morning. Mr Hunt: He would be pretty hard to see at 3.30 in the morning. The chief detective said that the only thing to do was to put him on a boat and get him out of the country. “I ask your Worship for just one chance. You’ve never given me one chance,” said accused. A Salvation Army officer said that he was prepared to look after Gwan for a time if the Indian was prepared to behave, which offer the Magistrate accepted. “All right, thank you,” said Gwan as he saluted Mr Hunt and the officer. “He’ll be back on Monday,” was the chief detective’s dry rep^y. “No. I won’t. I bet you I won’t You see, Mr Hammond,” was Gwan’s rejoinder. Chief-Detective Hammond: He’s got nowhere to sleep. He’ll do just the same again. Gwan: I bet you, I bet you. As he was half carried and half pushed by a constable from the dock Gwan was still calling loudly that he would lay a bet with Chief-Detective Hammond, and as he got to the door he saluted again. 3 m HE H!
