ASHBURTON NEWS.
LEVEL CROSSINGS WERE INSPECTED YESTERDAY.
Mr C. G. Wilson, assistant railways engineer from the Otago District Office, was in the Ashburton Count}' yesterday, and in company with Mr J. Simpson, assistant Public Works engineer, made an inspection of the level railway crossing on the main highway at Hinds. This is the only main highway level crossing in the county included io the southern district, as Windermere is the boundary between the Otago and Canterbury railway districts. Inspections are being made of all main highways level crossings throughout the Otago district with a view to making improvements where necessary in order to minimise crossing accidents. Choral Society’s Festival. There was a large attendance at the opening festival conducted by the Ashburton Choral Society last evening in His Majesty’s Theatre. Over 100 voices took part. The first was taken up with “ The Erl King s Daughter,” the soloists being Mrs Cara Tait, soprano; Mrs S. Bryant, contralto; and Mr R. J. Laurenson, baritone. The second part of the programme was devoted to “The Mount of Olives," the soloists being Mrs Cara Tait, Mr C. Williamson and Mr R. J. Laurenson The soloists and choir acquitted themselves well. The small but efficient orchestra was supplemented by players from Christchurch. The musical director, Mr W. H. Dixon, of Christchurch, is to be congratulated on the merits of the performance, which was a success from every point of view. Personal. . Mr E. Keig (manager of Ashburton Dairy Factory) left for Palmerston North last evening, where he will attend the Winter Show.
