SMART WORK BY CITY BRIGADE.

FIRE IN HIGH STREET IS QUICKLY / QUELLED

An early morning fire occurred today at the premises above Messrs Simpson and Williams’s book shop in High Street, and, but for the quick arrival of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, the whole building might have been gutted. As it was, the workrooms of Miss R. Williams, a dressmaker, were burnt out, and much damage was done in the rooms of the Shalimar Beauty Parlour, and of Mr F. J. Glackin, an optician. Arriving at work just before 8.30 a.m., an employee of Messrs Simpson and Williams found the shop filled with smoke, and the fire just breaking through into the shop from a corner in the roof The alarm had already been given, and the brigade were on the spot in a few moments. They soon had the fire well in hand. The outbreak started upstairs, and must have been smouldering in an almost airtight room for a long time. Little damage was done to the goods in the shop by water, except at the one point where the fire was starting to break through. The fire plug was on the opposite side of the road from the fire and, as a result, the hose lengths crossed the road, and trams and other traffic were held up for half an hour. A large crowd of people collected, but lack of any spectacular side to the conflagration soon caused people to disperse.
