TWO BODIES NOW ASKING FOR AID.
UNEMPLOYMENT.
WORKING OF CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE EXPLAINED. “All moneys contributed to the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee will be disposed of in the form of payment for work done on behalf of the community, and not in the form of cash grants,” said the Mayor (the Rev J. KArcher), in a statement made to-day, dealing with the operations of the two unemployment committees which are at present in existence in the city. The Mayor said that he had been requested by the Finance Committee of the City Council to draw the attention of citizens to the fact that two committees were operating in regard to unemployment. Firstly, there was the Citizens’ Committee, with its headquarters at tjie City Council offices and with the city treasurer handling its funds. The other was the committee organised by the unemployed themselves and operating from another position and working on another banking account. The appeal which the latter committee had sent out was, of course, upon its responsibility, added the Mayor. An appeal would be issued by the Citizens’ Committee in the course of a few days. It was desirable that the citizens should distinguish between the two bodies. If the committee operating under the control of the unemployed themselves could increase the aggregate amount of assistance to be secured for the unemployed, it would serve for the good of the public, but it was desirable that confusion should be avoided.
