ASHBURTON NEWS.

ONE DAY SHOW RETAINED. At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton A. and P. Association yesterday a lengthy discussion took place as to whether the annual fixture should be extended to two days. Colonel J. Findlay stated that the show had been continued for two days some years ago. It was a retrograde step to confine it to one day. Ashburton was a wealthy county and could run a twodays’ show. The Timaru show attracted 1600 entries compared with 1900 in Ashburton, and they had two days. There was too much of a rush in connection with a one day show, and it did not give either the exhibitors or the public the opoprtunities desired He moved that the next show be of two days’ duration. Mr Guinness, who seconded the motion, stated that as an exhibitor in the light horse section, he was unable on account of the short time to see any other part of the show. He thought a two day show would encourage more entries in the ring. Mr Hunter Morris, as a member of the finance committee, said he had to oppose the motion on account of the additional cost of £4O or £SO, as the association could not afford it. The president (Mr H. C. B. Withell), Messrs Andrew, J. Bland, L. Fechney, J. Letham, P. Shearer, W. Doak and C. Hale spoke in favour of the one day show. Colonel Findlay expressed surprise to hear all the breeders speaking against rhe motion. AshburtOn, he stated, was the most progressive county in the Dominion. He referred to the recent purchase by the local bodies of a flying ground and it was up to the members to back up this forward step. On being put to the meeting the motion was lost by a large majority. It was agreed to hold the next show on November 6, 1930. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The general committee of the Ashburton A. and P. Association met yesterday afternoon. The president, Mr li. C. B. Withell, was in the chair. An application from the South Canterbury Methodist Young Men’s Bible Class Union for the use of the associaton’s buildings for its Easter camp in 1931 was granted. A letter was received from the Post and Telegraph Department suggesting advertising on all letters sent through the local post office, the average being about 25,000 per week. The charge would be £ll for two weeks. The matter was left to the Finance Committee. The Clydesdale Horse Society forwarded the silver medal won at the last show by Mr C. Ilale. The prize was handed to Mr Hale by the president. A letter from Mr 11. R. Tasker, Ruapuna, in connection with the photography exhibits was referred to the arts and industrial committee. The question of subsidies on district Lays at the Christchurch Winter Show was referred to in a letter from the Canterbury A. and P. Association. Colonel J. Findlay thought the local association should enter a bay. It was decided that it was too late to organise a bay this year, but to advise the Canterbury Association that it would exhibit next year. Mr A. P. Bruce was appointed MidCanterbury representative on the electoral committee in connection with the election of the Meat Produceers’ Board. His nomination was recommended to the Farmers’ Union. The result of the recent flock ewe competitions was favourably commented on by the president. An improvement was noticeable in all cases which came before the judges. The Otago A. and P. Association intimated that a conference of kindred associations would be held in Dunedin on June 4 to discuss show dates and judges’ fees. ST JOHN AMBULANCE. The Royal Arch Chapter No. .1 Christchurch, wrote stating that the syllabus for 1930 was now in the hands of the secretaries. Nominations of officers were received for the half year.
