CARD TOURNAMENT WAS HELD IN SUBURBAN HALL,

The card tournaments were continued in the Suburban Hall on Wednesday evening, when there was a good attendance of players. In the ladies’ section. Miss I. Baker, representing the Young People’s Missionary Union, will visit Kaikoura next week, and will address meetings in various parts of the parish. Miss Baker will address a meeting in the Town Sunday Schoolroom nil the afternoon of Thursday, May 22. TIIE FISHING INDUSTRY. Fair catches are being made by the launch fishing fieet, the weather conditions being ideal. I.lany fishermen are engaged in netting the butter-fish, and various points on the coast are being tried out, motor lorries conveying the fishermen and boats to the respective positions. Outboard motors are used for this work, some of the craft being fitted with powerful engines, and fishing, with the aid of the moon, is being carried out until very late.

WORK ON NEW JETTY. The superstructure of the new jetty is finished, and the reconstruction should be finished within the course of a f«w days. DANCE IN AID OF BAND. A dance, organised by the staff of the Adelphi Hotel, in aid of the band fund, was held in the bandroom on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance. A dainty supper was provided. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr W. Thomas (piano) and Mr C. Reeves (side effects). Mr R. Clarke played several extras. Mr F. Taylor was M.C. *
