HOUSE OF LORDS REJECTS COAL BILL AMENDMENT.

LONDON, May 14. The House of Lords rejected by 82 votes to 35 an amendment in the Coal Bill that was moved by Lord Gainford and accepted by Lord Thomson, to reinstate the provision deleted by the Commons for raising a central levy in order to facilitate the sale of any class of coal. Lord Melchett’s amendment, providing that a colliery which was in the hands of some manufacturing undertaking that was using the output of coal in it» own works, should not be included in the quota, was carried by 105 votes to 13.
