NEW REST ROOMS IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE.
PROPOSAL THAT CITY SHOULD BUY PROPERTY.
“I am quite incapable of discussing the matter until I have reported the result of the interview to the City Council,” said the Mayor, the Rev, J. K. Archer, this morning, when questioned regarding the interview which Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and he had yesterday with the Hon H. Atmore. The purpose of the interview was to discuss with Mr Atmore, who had been deputed by the Prime Minister to receive the deputation, certain questions that have arisen in connection with a proposal that the City Council should purchase a property in Cathedral Square for use as a site for new rest rooms for women. The property is in the south-west comer of the Square, and is at present occupied by Izard and Loughnan, solicitors. The owner is Mr G. Sevicke Jones, and he has offered the building to the City Council for approximately £II,OOO. There is a wide lane running between the building and the Post Office, and before proceeding with any negotiations for the purchase of the property the City- Council wished to secure an assurance that the Post and Telegraph Department would not build across this lane. It was hoped that an agreement might be reached whereby the lane could be declared a right-of-way. The Mayor said to-day that _ thousands of pounds were involved in the matter and the negotiations with the Post Office were of a delicate nature.
