HURLEY SHIELD GAMES CONTINUED TO-DAY. On dry grounds and in bright sunshine, the second series of matches in the first round for the Ilurlev Shield was played to-day. Rangers and Sumner occupied the English Park ground. Thistle met St Albans at Spreydon Domain, Western tried conclusions with New Brighton, and Nomads were pitted against Technical Old Boys. NOMADS V. TECHNICAL. Nomads and Technical Old Boys met at Hagley Park, Old Boys playing one short until Seay came on the field after five minutes' play, of which they had the best. After a series of straggling rushes by Nomads, Peterson, at centre, bulJoeked his way up to the goal and shot. Nomads 1, Technical 0. A minute later some clever exchanges in the forwards let Adams and Pickup up to Technical’s goal. Pickup's shot hit the post, and rebounded through. Nomads 2. Technical 1. Nomads conceded a corner, but Sliarr cleared confidently. There was nothing decisive in the. next fifteen minutes’ play, and half-time came with the score:— Nomads 2, Technical Old Boys 0. Even play marked the re-eommence-ment, but the. game was faster and more attractive. Nomads showing better combination than they did last week. Good passing put Nomads In range, and Nutley made a fine attempt which Martin returned. Good work by Clasper won Nomads a corner, and Peterson, the exMarist League player, booted the ball home. Nomads 3, Technical 0. From the kick-off Nomads staged a passing rush, Clasper goaling from outside right. Nomads 4, Technical 0. Peterson made a great solo effort, but when only the goalkeeper remained to be passed. Cawtheray rushed across and unbalanced him so that his kick hit the upright. A few minutes later Peterson was knocked out when he collided with the ’keeper at the end of a similar effort. With ten minutes to go Martin ran out of the goal to meet the ball, missed, and Clasper put It through. The game ended with the score— NOMADS 5 TECHNICAL OLD BOYS . . 0

RANGERS V. SUMNER. The teams at English Park were:— Rangers—F. Payne, W. Lorrimer, W. Barnes, F. Robb, J. Wilson, J. M’Lean, D. Fraser, H. Sloan, E. Barntes, H. M’Glinchy, C. Morgan. Sumner—T. Dacre, E. Allen, R. H. Neville, J. M’Giffin, H. Jackson, G. Stiff, L. Barwell, G. Brown, M. Peterson, H. Stnneman, A. Campbell. The opening stages provided little in the way of bright football, both teams lacking in combination. Sumner opened the account early, Stoneman scoring with a long lob. Sumner 1, Rangers 0. Sumner’s lead was short-lived, E. Barnes registering with the feeblest of shots that T. Dacre fumbled badly. Sumner 3, Rangers 3. Two minutes later Rangers were in front. Morgan, following up, beat E. Allen for the ball and tucked it safely away in the top of the net with a smart angle shot. It was a beautiful goal. Rangers 2, Sumner 1. The leaders kept up the pressure and E. Barnes was unlucky with a brace of long drives. ’ Pretty work by Sloan gave E. Barnes his chance, and he made no mistake with his “ grounder.” Rangers 3, Sumner 1. The seasiders were knocking at the door when Campbell dropped a high centre to the goalmouth, but Payne got it away. Up-and-down straggling play ended an eventful if not brilliant first half. Half-time score— Rangers 3, Sumner 1. Loose play ushered in the second spell. A smart hook by Morgan gave Rangers a chance, but there was no one there. Sloan (Rangers) suffered a head injury, and was off for some minutes. Sumner got close when the ball swung from wing to wing, but Lorrimer relieved. Jackson (Sumner) left the field with a knee injury. A loose Rangers effort saw M’Glinchy score with a slow shot. Rangers 4, Sumner 1. Sumner forced a corner then, and Peterson headed the leather home. Rangers 4, Sumner 2. Jackson resumed at this stage. Trouble loomed for Rangers when Lorrimer missed a clearing kick, but Robb found touch. A smart Rangers attack ended with a good shot by M’Glinchy, but Dacre fended clear. M organ gave Sloan a chance, but the inside-right’s shot struck the cross-bar. Sumner thrust along the left, but Payne snapped up from Stoneman. A miss by Jackson gave Wilson a chance, and the centrehalf’s shot forced Dacre to the ground to clear. Morgan almost notched another before the bell sounded, with the score: RANGERS 4 SUMNER 2 Referee: Mr J. Jennings, ST ALBANS V. THISTLE. Thistle met St Albans at Spreydon Park this afternoon. Thistle won the toss and elected to play with the sun in 'their eyes. Thistle opened the attack with a series of long kicks which gained them nothing. The Thistle forwards then worked their way up-field, but their shooting was hampered by the strong sun. Later G. Walker scored from the side-line. Thistle continued to show their superiority, and Hastings netted with a beautiful shot from about twenty-five yards out. Dorrie, in goal for St Albans, was playing a great game. The St Albans forwards were clearly outclassed and were never dangerous. Half-time came with Thistle attacking and the score— Thistle 2, St Albans 0. The second spell saw Angus leading a hot St Albans attack, which was spoiled by a weak shot at goal. From a throw-in M’Leod secured and dummied his way upfielci and shot, Dorrie diving full out to save. Thistle continued to force the play, and from a scrimmage in the goalmouth Hasting secured, and scored with a short kick. At this stage Rump, of St Albans, was injured, and was forced to retire. Later Thistle gained two* corners, but failed to increase their lead. St Albans then took a turn in the attacking, and for a time had Gwilliam on his toes. A period of dull play followed. The game ended with St Albans attacking and the final score: THISTLE 3 ST ALBANS 0 WESTERN V. NEW BRIGHTON Western kicked off in a keenly contested game. The standard of play was high, and several good saves were made. Brighton played with dash and speed, and Western were surprised at their form. There was no score in the first half. In the second half M’Millan scored first for Western, and shortly after Brighton found the net. M’Millan again scored for AVestern, to be followed by a good rush by Brighton. This ended in a score. Just on time, Brighton succeeded in winning the game. BRIGHTON 3 AVESTERN 2
