MALCOLM ROSS, AUTHOR AND JOURNALIST, DIES.
WAS PIONEER IN N.Z. -ALPINE EXPLORATION
(Special to the “Star".) WELLINGTON, April 15. The death has occurred at the age of 6S of Malcolm Ross, a well-known Parliamentary journalist for over a quarter of a century-.
Mr Ross was a son of the late Alexander Ross, of Dingwall, Scotland, and was born at Dunedin in 1862. He was educated at the Palmerston Fligh School and at Otago University. He was a prominent athlete, and in addition to success at rowing, tennis, athletics, cycling and golf, he was an Otago Rugby representative. Mr Ross at one time represented the London “ Times ”in New Zealand. He acted as Wellington correspondent to several Dominion and Australian newspapers. Mr Ross accompanied the New Zealand forces to Samoa, and subsequently- was New Zealand war correspondent on Gallipoli and in Egypt and France. lie was associated with the Reform Party during its long period in opposition to the Seddon administration, having been an intimate friend of the late Rt Hon W. F. Massey.
In his early day-s he was a pioneer in alpine climbing and exploration in New Zealand, his book on the New Zealand Alps being among the best known works on the subject. Mr Ross was at one time a member of the Alpine Club, London, vice-presi-dent of the New Zealand Alpine Club and editor of the New Zealand Alpine Journal. ITis publications include “ A climber in New Zealand.” “ Light and Shade in War,” “ Aorangi,” “ Through Tuhoe Land ” and “ Empire at War.”
