LEVELS COUNCIL AND MAIN ROAD PROPOSALS.
(Special to the “Star.”) TIMARU, April 2. The Levels County Council has been rebuked by the chairman of the Highways Board, in reference to the paving proposals of the council north and south of Timaru to the Opihi and Pareora Rivers respectively. The chairman of the Main Highways Board has intimated to the council, for their information and action, the board s surprise that the council should desire to hold up the calling of tenders for the southern portion, which proposal had been approved, until the proposals were ready for the northern section. Mr Furkert further* stated that a sum of £IO,OOO was provided in the estimates this year, and yet the council had not made application for any of amount. The letter further advised that the board would be glad if the County Council would make arrangements to call for tenders immediately for work approved. The council decided at its meeting today to proceed in accordance with the board’s request. Mr Furkert drew the council’s attention to the necessity of regular maintenance of the Tixnaru-Temuka Read, and requested that the council should expedite the plans for its reconstruction. A Serious Nuisance. According to the district health inspector, a serious nuisance has been created at Coonor Road, Timaru, by a boiling-down works, where fish offal and carcases of animals are exposed to the sun. The Levels County Council has served notice on the owner to close the works.
