MR JONES THANKS HIS SUPPORTERS.

“ELECTION RESULT IS SURPRISE FOR MAYOR.” (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, April 2. “ I think the result is a complete answer to those who asserted that a by-election was unnecessary,” said Mr C. E. J ones when ‘ interviewed in Wellington to-day by a reporter. Continuing, Mr Jones said: “It shows conclusively that a large body of electors welcomed the opportunity to record their dissatisfaction with the Socialistic administration of the affairs of the city. The electors evidently fully grasped the seriousness of the position and registered their dissatisfaction most emphatically.” He was sorry he was unable to be present in person to thank those who voted for him, and also those who assisted in securing such a splendid victory. “ I hope to justify the confidence reposed in me, and to give the utmost possible support to the stalwarts of the Citizens’ Association on the council. “ I think the most surprised person in Christchurch is probably the Mayer, who on two occasions expressed to me his regret that he would not have the pleasure of welcoming me on the council. He will realise now that I have more friends than he imagined, and that they extend far beyond the range of my rostrum.”
