PROFESSOR SPEIGHT TENDERS RESIGNATION.

Professor R. Speight has resigned from the chair of geology at Canterbury College. The Board of Governors yesterday accepted the resignation as from December 31 next. The board decided, on the recommendation of the College Committee, that the chair should not be filled for the time being, but that applications should be invited in New Zealand and Australia for an independent full-time lecturer in geology at a salary of £6OO per annum, the lecturer to take also any necessary classes in physical geography as prescribed for the B.A. degree. the appointee to commence duty on February 1, 1931. Professor Speight has retired from the position after forty years’ teaching service under the board. He was appointed assistant master in the Christchurch Boys’ High School in 1890. While there, he was appointed lecturer in geology. Later, he was appointed professor. He is the second Professor of Geology at Canterbury College, Sir Julius von Haast being the first. Captain F. W. Ilutton, whom Professor Speight succeeded, was lecturer in geology. Professor Speight retains the position of Curator of Canterbury Museum. He was appointed assistant-curator to Mr E. R. Waite in 1910. Mr Waite resigned to become Curator of the South Australian Museum, Adelaide, and Professor Speight then was appointed Curator of Canterbury Museum.
