PROVIDING WORK FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.
An offer of £IOO to be spent on relief work for unemployed returned soldiers was accepted by the City Council last evening. The council will snbsidise the amount £ for £. The offer was made by the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The City Treasurer ' reported that there was sufficient money available to subsidise the amount and, as the matter was somewhat urgent, the committee had accepted the offer and instructed the Superintendent of Reserves to make arrangements for the necessary work. It was anticipated that the amount would be expended at Bottle Lake and the Municipal Golf Links. Authority for the action was granted. Councillor A. E. Armstrong said that if the council carried out his policy of adopting the forty hours week it would give greater assistance in reliev-; ing unemployment. He objected to! the principle of subsidising grants for charitable relief work. The report was adopted. B 3 S® H 3EH HI ®S3ES ® S 3 @@ ®HIHISI® SI ®!
